I have taken 5 years of piano lessons from Ms. Sato, and it's been so fun learning from her. I love our conversations, and she pushes me to become a better pianist. She's helped me so much when I learn my pieces for recitals and has had faith in me when I doubt myself. These 5 years have truly been beneficial for me, and I will continue to take lessons!

Prior to being acquainted with Ms. Sato, I studied the piano for one year at the age of nine. My first workbooks included Edna Mae Burnam's Dozen A Day series and Bastien's Primer series, and my parents were satisfied that I could read basic notation. However, my teacher primarily specialized in jazz piano, and my parents yearned for me to focus more on classical piano music, so they switched me to a different teacher. That was when I met Ms. Sato, my current piano teacher for the past decade. Even though I was young and thought of piano as a chore, I recall how enjoyable the lessons were because Ms. Sato explained the piano technique, musical terminology, and history very clearly. My parents were surprised by how well I improved after one year, and said something along the lines of: "After switching to Ms. Sato, you rapidly improved that year!" I felt that I improved the most during my seventh year, when I was inspired by a high school senior playing the final movement of Piano Sonata No. 14 (Cis moll) Op. 27 No. 2 in one of the practice rooms at my school. It was then I realized that I was not working hard enough towards piano, and I needed to assume "hard work" as my middle name for me to play music. Under Ms. Sato's guidance, I learned the importance of a good work ethic, and she assisted me in taking my music to a better level. One of the lessons I am always reminding myself is that music transcends reality, and chasing the notes is offensive to the composer. I am grateful to have a teacher like Ms. Sato to guide me as I encounter various composers and their ingenious work, and to foster a love for the piano.

I enjoyed learning the piano from Ms. Sato. She helps me improve and motivates me when I give up. Being able to master the skill of playing the piano has taught me a lot, failure is the key to success, each mistake teaches us a valuable lesson. Accepting the difficult challenges that Ms. Sato has challenge me with has helped me grow and become a better learner. Although I wanted to keep getting better, I decided to take a gap year. However, I came back to Ms. Sato after I realized that she is an amazing teacher and I absolutely love learning and playing the piano. I am incredibly grateful for the decision that I made because now I can play pieces that I used to dream of being able to play. Ms. Sato helped me exceed in playing the piano quickly even after a gap year.

It has been a little more than one year since my small boy started to learn the piano from Ms. Sato.
In the beginning, I was worrying if he can take lessons without problem due to only being four.
Thankfully, Ms. Sato, chose some fun materials and combined them for my son to be enjoyable.
Recently I see him becoming able to play pieces reading music himself.
He tells me that he likes talking with Ms. Sato as well as playing the piano in the lessons.
As soon as he comes back home from each lesson, he tells us how interesting the conversation was.
I hope he will learn a lot from Ms. Sato who is knowledgeable with much experience from now on.

My son took up the piano recently.
Though he was an utter beginner, Ms. Sato used various materials for him to be able to enjoy the piano lessons.
Thanks to her good teaching, my son told me that he really loves the piano.
Actually, as he is extremely shy, it is impossible to join a group lesson.
So, we have been looking for a piano teacher who teaches individually.
We are now glad that my son truly adores such a tender teacher, and attends his lessons every week happily.

I realized that your son has rich curiosity and spontaneousness at our second lesson.
As you know, most children get nervous at the first lesson.
In the lesson when his aunt brought him here, he was repeatedly talking to himself “How fun playing the piano is!” “Why am I so happy playing the piano?”
This is marvel.
There are very few people who can continue to have such pure heart toward music throughout their lives.
I will teach him so that this bud will grow straight from now on.
I thank you for your cooperation.

When we were losing our way to Ms. Sato’s piano class during our first visit, I phoned her for assistance.
Her beautiful and gentle voice has stuck in my mind.
I also got the impression from her lessons that children can learn music theory and technique while cultivating sensitivity.
Bottom line, I’m thrilled to have her as my son’s teacher.

Although my piano class is not near your place by bicycle, you and your boy clearly express your will to continue.
This makes me very happy indeed.
Your boy is very bright, and he flashed a hilarious grin to me when we first made eye-contact at the entrance.
As I asked him “Do you want to come here again?”, he shook his head side to side to perturb his mother and myself.
A second later he amusingly smiled saying “I have changed my mind. I will come here again!”
I will make efforts in teaching not to ruin his rich sensitivity.
Furthermore, I will try to make our lessons a good balance between technique and knowledge.

Personally, I believe that learning the piano consists of the following three components.
1. Deepening the comprehensions toward music and arts. (Studying theory and refining the sensibility etc. )
2. Learning to express from the somatic aspect. (How to control fingers and relax our bodies etc.)
3. Knowing well enough about the instrument. (On the condition that the player has the knowledge of the mechanism of the piano how to generate the sounds, opting or adopting the most appropriate technique.)
There are a lot of piano teachers who teach 1 and 2.
However, Ms. Sato is fully conversant with the third perspective as well.
As the piano is as intricate as precision machinery, generating the sounds with enough understanding of the instrument is extremely difficult.
Having said that, I think it is extremely important.
Ms. Sato gets these significant points across to her students properly.
On top of that, she loves music very much.
In other words, I may describe her as cacoethes.
I’m grateful to spend a wonderful time being with her through music.

I’m proud of getting acquainted with such a nice student who began piano when she was little, still playing the piano as an adult.
Yes. I’m interested in many aspects of the piano as well as you are.
This instrument has both its limit and potential.
Also, the fate of the piano has been very susceptible to the social concerns besides players reasons such as, manufactures policy, tuners skills, merchandises, distribution system have influenced the piano world.
In a long history, numerous people have continued to pour their passion and efforts to improve the quality of this instrument.
Without their sincere attitude, we wouldn’t have been able to experience the expressive capacity of the modern pianos.
Knowing about these circumstances helps players feel their daily practice more fruitful.
More than all these, I was impressed by your positive heart that has lots of affection toward music.
The higher the level, the more we expect of the instrument.
Therefore, it is natural that many grand pianos didn’t satisfy you after you visited a lot of showrooms spending many days.
I’m glad to hear that you decided to move for some reasons including considering purchasing a new grand piano.
It will add color to your new life and excitement from now on!

Ms. Sato advised me on how to pass the test.
I realized that I will be able to enjoy music more deeply if I acquire these elements, knowledge, and relative hearing ability.
I’m now motivated in practicing the piano thanks to Ms. Sato.
I thank her for such understandable lesson.

Leaning to music in a good balance is crucial in improving playing the piano.
Unfortunately, quite a lot of piano learners tend to incline to only tap the keyboard seeing the printed music.
As a result, the joy of music decreases by half.
You wouldn’t be able to seep yourself into creativity and expressiveness by just following the sheet music.
The word relative hearing ability you used in your comment is the one that is the natural ability we human beings are given.
So, it is not difficult.
Please listen to the sounds you create carefully.
Also, I will definitely give you an assistance to get the teacher’s license.

Reply from WISTERIA Piano Class
Thank you for telling me your future plan and sharing your motivation.
Yes. Franz Liszt wrote a lot of flashy pieces that are specifically designed to improve students’ technique.
You can practice some of them if you want, but don’t belittle the pieces composed by J.S. Bach, C. Czerny, W .A. Mozart etc. that seem sober.
